Zesco United befittingly play their biggest game of the season on the final day of the 2017 season when they host ‘Mighty’ Mufulira Wanderers in a must-win fixture at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
The match is a make-or-break for both sides.

Zesco must win the match to ensure they clinch the 2017 FAZ Super Division title and in so doing that result will send Mighty down to Division 1.

Zesco head into the match looking to end a two-game winless run in which they have picked up two successive 0-0 draws against Red Arrows at home and away at Green Eagles.

But coach Tenant Chembo is optimistic they can snap-out of the brief dry spell and collect the three points that would hand Zesco its sixth league title this weekend.

“It is all about focus on the job at hand. The players all know what is at stake and we have managed big games before. This is not exceptional,” Chembo said.

Zesco have a slender one point lead over defending champions Zanaco who are 2nd on 70 points tied with 3rd placed Green Buffaloes whom they beat on goal difference.

There is good news for Zesco heading into the Mighty clash following striker Jesse Were return to training after missing last Sunday’s game against Eagles due to a knock sustained against Arrows on November 23 at Levy.

“Jesse is fine and ready for selection. He returned to training on Wednesday,” Chembo said.

Mighty has also been Were’s good hunting ground against whom he has scored in two of his last three games he has featured against.

And in each of those two games Were has found the target, Zesco have on to collect the three points against Mighty.

Meanwhile, Zesco also enjoy a good run against Mighty with three wins a draw and one defeat since the nine-time champions returned to the FAZ Super Division in 2015.

Zesco beat Mighty 2-1 away at Shinde in the first leg on July 26.

However, Zesco will be hoping history does not repeat itself after Mighty beat them 1-0 in Mufulira on the penultimate day of the 2016 season that ended their interest in the title.

The onus is on Zesco and Chembo to rewrite that little piece of history as they fight to attain another league milestone for the Ndola giants
