Zesco United made a bright to their 2017 CAF Confederation Cup Group C campaign after a 1-0 home win over Smouha on Saturday at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
The win lifted Zesco to the top of Group C for at least 24 hours ahead of hosts CRD Libolo and Sudanese side Al Hilal Obeid’s match in Calulo, Angola on Sunday.
Zesco and Smouha went to the break scoreless but the home side wasted gilt edged chances in the first half..
Smouha goalkeeper Mohamed Gabaski denied Idris Mbombo twice in the 17th and 19th minutes while Dave Daka sent his shot inches wide of the near post in the 43rd minute.
But Smouha did give Zesco a scare earlier in the 10th minute when Ahmed Hamed’s header went high much to the relief of goalkeeper Jacob Banda.
Smouha again gave Zesco another fright in the 49th minute when Islam
Mohareb shot glazed the woodwork.
But the deadlock was broken in the 72nd minute when Smouha defender Patrick Malo handled John Chingandu’s shot.
Jesse Were stepped up to successfully convert the penalty to record his third goal in the competition this year..
It could have been 2-0 in the 81st minute but Fackson Kapumbu’s shot was parried by Gabaski.
Zesco lead on 3 points, Smouha are bottom of Group C on zero points as the two sides await Sundays’ result in Angola..
