Zesco United this afternoon clinched their sixth league title in style in a six goal thriller following a 4-2 home win over Mighty Mufulira Wanderers at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Zesco finish the season on 74 points, one ahead of outgoing champions Zanaco who also won their final match of the season that was yet so near but so far for them to retain the title.
Zesco made a flying start against Mighty when John Chingandu put them ahead in the 1st minute.
However, Mighty pulled one back two minutes later through Guily Manziba.
Chingandu then had the crowd on its feet in the 18th minute but saw his shot hit the side netting.
Two minutes later Manziba rattled the hosts when he slipped past four defenders to beat Jacob Banda and put Mighty in the lead.
But that lead lasted just five minutes when Jesse Were tapped in an Enock Sabamukama pass on the near far post.
Then Chingandu was unfortunate not to have scored a brace in the 34th minute when his volley hit the woodwork.
But Were made sure in the 38th minute when he completed his brace with another cool tap-in off a Lazarus Kambole assist.
Mighty were later reduced to ten men in the 58th minute when defender Mbelenge Ngulakwey was sent off for a second booking.
Zesco continue to pressed as they battled to ensure they put a healthy gap between themselves and Might but Kambole’s 76th minute goal from a Simon Siliwimba assist was mysteriously ruled out for an offside that never was.
However, Kambole made sure of the triumph in the 82nd minute to send Levy Stadium into celebrations as Zesco reclaimed the title they last won in 2015.
The victory was even sweeter for coach Tenant Chembo who won his first league title after finishing second in 2013 and 2016.
Meanwhile, Zesco’s joy was Mighty’s pain after the nine-time champions were demoted following the defeat to end their three year stay in the FAZ Super Division.
